Wellness Champion Spotlight: Ruth Mason

A wellness champion provides advocacy, leadership and support for improving the health of Kaiser Permanente employees and SCPMG physicians.

Wellness champions are comprised of a cross-section of employees and physicians from across the SCAL region to represent a wide range of perspectives.

Q: How would your closest friend describe you in one word?

A: Loyal.

Q: What’s something surprising about you that your colleagues may not know?

A: I used to bowl in Pro/Am tournaments in my early 20’s and tried to make the USA Olympic bowling team when it was first going to be an exhibition sport.

Q: If you could have any superpower, what would it be and what would you do with it?

A: Empathy. Would help me understand and respond better to other’s experiences that I haven’t personally encountered.

Q: What is your go-to activity when you need to recharge?

A: I either go for a walk or if I need to really recharge, or I become one with the couch and binge watch a show.

Q: If your wellness journey had a theme song, what would it be?

A: Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen

Q: What is your favorite part about being a wellness champion?

A: Seeing others change their habits and become wellness advocates in their departments.

Q: What is your favorite way to stay active during the workday?

A: Wearing a watch that counts my steps is vital to me moving around in the day. Helps keep me moving so that I hit my steps each day.

Q: What’s your favorite memory or success story about wellness at KP?

A: Running a 6-week activity challenge and having a nurse lose 30 pounds which was incredible!

Q: If you could host a dream wellness event for your service area, what would it be?

A: A large roaming wellness fair that stops at each medical center and not just at large hospital sites.

Q: What drives your passion for wellness?

A: Having a life altering experience changed the way I viewed wellness. If I can help just one person, it’s all worth it.
